FED UP Movie Review

What was it about?

In our high school health class, we watched a movie called Fed Up directed by Stephanie Soechtig. We found this movie very interesting for many reasons. When the movie first started, we thought this movie was about avoiding obesity and the risks of being obese. We were right.
The movie showed us the difference between 160 calories in almonds compared to 160 calories in soda. It is that almonds have many good nutrients in it, while soda has tons of refined sugars and fats which are unhealthy. Fed Up compared sugary beverages to the tobacco industry. They wanted to show the seriousness of how dangerous sugary beverages are, they cause obesity and other chronic diseases, and tobacco causes cancer.
This movie basically attacked our government's nutritional guidelines set by the World Health Organization. Twenty doctors from the American Academy of Family Physicians resigned because the academy partnered up with Coca-Cola. The twenty doctors didn't want to be a part of a hypocritical organization that says they are against obesity yet are partners with a company that plays a part in obesity. The food industry tried listening to all of the complaints against them about calories, fat, and sugar, and tried labelling things as "low calorie" and etc. But although they put "low calorie" on the food labels does not mean they take out the bad things such as sugar and fat.

What happens to your body when you eat sugar?

Sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth. Sugar can turn into fat in your liver with can eventually cause non-alcoholic liver disease. When people eat a lot of sugar, it can cause resistance to the hormone insulin, which can contribute to many diseases such as Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes. There is also considerable evidence that sugar, due to its harmful effects on metabolism, can contribute to cancer.
Sugar is also HIGHLY addictive, studies show it is even more addictive then cocaine.

Overall thoughts on how my diet can improve?

LOGAN: To improve Logan's diet, he should try drinking more water throughout the day and eat less processed foods.
COURTNEY: To improve Courtney's diet she should absolutely substitute a healthy green smoothie or water instead of coffee in the morning. Also, she should eat more throughout the day instead of usually waiting until she gets home from school and sports to eat. Also she should eat nonprocessed food because all she ever eats is processed foods.
